As you may have heard we are currently building a new web site, a free site where people can exchange ideas on existentialism. For the past several months we have been working on the functionality and layout of the site. It was quite the task just getting the basic functionality and layout down, but it looks like we’ve got it at this point. Everything we are working on is still offline, so I’m not able to show you what it looks like. Nonetheless I wanted to share the update with everyone following the story.
Today we would like to announce that we have made some serious headway. Having completed the basic functionality and layout, the next step was to work on the functions of registration and login. As of today those functions have been added. Of course they need some tweaking to get them to work just right. We are ecstatic about the appearance of the site and know that it only gets better from here.
Another thing I wanted to share with everyone is the color scheme in case anyone had suggestions. Presently we are considering consistently using purple text. The background is a very light blue. The header is lime green. The items are separated by a grey bar, in which there is info about the item posted. I like the present color scheme but I am not completely sold. Please comment with any ideas.
I’ll continue to post updates about the upcoming site on our blog to keep you all informed. We have a group on Face Book for anyone interested in discussing the site prior to launch and for anyone interested in receiving a registration invitation on the launch date:

personally, I don't like blue and green together.
the so-called "complementary" color-pairs are: red and green (problems though with red/green color blindness in men); purple/blue and yellow (has connotations of royalty). I can't remember the third pair.
you've also got to consider that people have their monitors set at different gamma levels. So what looks great on one site looks terrible/unreadable on another.
and you've got to optimise for at least three browsers --- chrome, firefox, IE. They all haver their own little funny formatting quirks.
Some people find it uncomfortable reading white text on black background. Personally, that's my favourite look, with lots of yellow thrown in.
Be careful using "opacity" (works differently and requires different coding depending on browser.
And finally, will you have a fixed or variable width format (eg in terms of column widths specified in pixels or percentages.)
Fixed width has the disadvantage that you are not using all the available "real estate" on the page, so it looks a bit bare and sparse,. The advantage is you know it'll "work" without columns dropping off due to not enough space. As long as you do the calculations correctly. The column widths, gutters, margins, padding: all must add up to less than the total in the outer wrapper; if they don't, things start falling off the page.
Advantage of variable width is it uses the page to maximum advantage on every monitor, but can be tricky to work with, especially in terms of specifying sizes for photographs etc.
Want to do a link swap? I'll carry yours if you carry mine!
Keep up the great work.

Thank you for your comments mastermystery, you obviously know quite a bit about layout, I will take them into consideration. I know that the colors, etc. will be a work in progress and I appreciate the heads up on the variables. I did check out your blog and it looks fascinating. I'd like to exchange links with you. I'll add a link now and you are welcome to do the same.
Also do you have any suggestions for the following issues:
centering the text in the header of this blog (it appears off-center)
creating a link to the Face Book group in the header (link appears as just text)
Thanks again and see you at the group and then at the site!
