My most recent endeavor is trying to find people in China and Russia that may be interested in following blogs. According to some of the reports that I have read, China blocks both FaceBook and Twitter...I am unsure on Russia's position on the two networks. I don't know if I am surprised at this or just disappointed. With so much information out there and the ability to form communities, you would think country leaders would want their citizens to be able to partake--but apparently that is not the case. It is strange that both sites are blocked because I have found several users of the two sites that claim to be in countries that block the sites. Perhaps the users mean that they are from the respective countries.
Anyways, I had to resort to other means of finding blog followers in these countries. I know right now that I don't have any followers in these two countries because I use Google Analytics to assess the traffic to my blog. They tell me which countries visitors are from and how many people visited from each country. They total the number of countries represented for me, right now, it is 26.
I then went to BlogCatalog and typed Russia in one search and China in another. A bunch of blogs turned up under each search. I figure by publicly following some of the blogs in Russia and China, people in those countries are more likely to see my profile and follow it back to our blog. In that respect, it is very adventageous to be able to put your profile picture up on someone else's blog site. It gives your own site exposure to people you would otherwise never get to meet.
It is difficult because there is no way of telling if a site will have the google or facebook follower widget just by seeing the title in BlogCatalog. One thing I started doing was to click on the other followers at one of the sites that did have the google follower widget. I paid special attention to names or pictures with chinese symbols and characters. These people were at least aware of the google widget and were probably following other blogs with the widget or hosting their own blog. This turned out to be one of the quickest ways to get my profile up on some of these chinese and russian blog sites. Let me know if you have any suggestions.
